WINHEC 2018 Youth Camp
As written in an earlier newsletter, we encourage WINHEC/WIREC participants to bring youth to Sápmi. As a special event for youth, we will arrange an indigenous youth camp at our school. The participants will attend different activities and workshops together with students from our school. The Youth Camp will take place from Monday 20th to Wednesday 22nd of August in Guovdageaidnu. Accommodation will be at the school as well as all the meals.
During the camp we offer different workshops.
Music:
This workshop will be themed around traditional and modern music from Sápmi and other indigenous cultures. There will be fun activities, such as a yoik-workshop with our local musicians and a chance to showcase your own culture while collaborating with others.

and plants we gather at the social trip. You will also learn how to make traditional sámi bread in a lávvu, and “coffee-cheese”. An example of a dish can be boiled reindeer meat and marrowbone of reindeer, and for dessert whipped cream with cloudberry and lingonberry. If you are a vegetarian, you will be able to focus on dishes without meat. Please let us know in advance.
Duodji (Handicraft):
The traditional Sámi handicraft is called duodji in the Sámi language. Duodji can be sorted into two groups; Dipmaduodji (soft handicraft, ie. Use of soft materials like leather etc.) and garraduodji (hard handicraft, ie. Use of hard materials like wood etc.). We will be focusing on the soft duodji, and will not be using machines, as we are going to work with different sewing- and braiding techniques. There will also be an opportunity to make a duodji product to bring with you back home. Some of the products you can make are; * Coffee bag * Bracelet * Necklace * Phone pouch All equipment will be available here, so you do not have to bring anything, unless you want to. |
Nature resourcing:
The nature resourcing workshop will teach you how to use natural resources to your advantage. We will be going to a swamp called Mohkkejeaggi, where we will cut the gámasuoinnit, bladder sedge. When we have enough grass, we return to the school in time for lunch. After lunch you will learn how to prepare the grass for the drying process. It depends on the weather how to dress, but warm and waterproof clothes are recommended. Waterproof boots are also recommended and will be available for borrowing if you don't have a pair. Gámasuoinnit, or Carex Vesicaria has been used by the Sámi people for a long time. We put the grass in our traditional footwear (gápmagat), to hold our feet warm and dry, at winter and at summertime. |
Social trip
The first day of the youth camp, August 20th, the school is going on a social trip outside where you are lucky enough to join us! We will have many fun activities, such as berry picking, a lasso and running relay race, and gather in lávvus (which may be a smoky experience 😉). There will also be an opportunity to try the Sámi way of Seine fishing and possibly duck hunting. In the lávvu, you will get to experience the way many Sámi make their coffee and consume "coffeecheese".
(This trip is mandatory)
As mentioned, the accommodation will be at our school. We will provide mattresses and blankets. It is also possible to sleep outside in a traditional lávvu, if you want to try that.
What you need to bring:
Warm clothes
Waterproof clothing
Hiking boots
You will also be able to borrow additional clothing.
We encourage you to bring your traditional regalia/clothing if possible. If you play any traditional instrument, or any instrument, we will be delighted if you will share this with us.
